An excerpt from a student who belonged to the batch of 2011 from Church Park, Chennai.
I was a very curious kid when it came to Christmas and Christmas celebrations at school. Been to the presentation convent all my life, the month of December, though gave the blues of half-yearly examinations, brought a smile to my face when I thought about Christmas and it’s celebrations at school. The mere thought of Christmas trees, Christmas tree lights, the beautiful decorations, the hanging gardens, Christmas wreaths, Christmas crib, Christmas balls in red and gold, little Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph figurines and everything gave me the joy. The joy was immense and immeasurable. As a little child, I was fascinated by Santa Claus. Well, who wouldn’t be right?
Christmas was just not about the celebrations for me. It was much more than that. We gathered around and helped save up money and food for the needy. We collected whatever money, food and clothing materials we could get from our own pockets or from home and gave it away to the people in need. Besides having fun, we made sure to realize that Christmas was all about making this world a better place. Our school made sure that we were able to provide alms for the poor and that inculcated the helping tendency in me and everyone who went to school with me.
We always wore beautiful dresses in white and red and rehearsed singing holy carols all month. We also set up the Christmas crib where Baby Jesus was born and we always made sure to protect the crib from any damage and destruction. The final day, a week before Christmas where our Christmas holidays began was when we had our final show on stage. With a thoughtful Christmas drama, rejoicing the birth of Jesus Christ, the nativity set-up that brought the essence of X-mas in town, Santa Claus figurines, students and teachers dressed up as Santa Claus distributing chocolates and gifts for one another, we had all the fun one could imagine.
Besides the Christmas play, decorating the Christmas tree was my most favourite part and I shall vouch for the fact that everyone who went to school with me loved it too. We bought several colourful accessories and super blingy decorations to adorn the luscious green Christmas tree. While we did so, had so much fun that we just couldn’t get over even after so many years post- high school. There have been innumerable times when I rejoiced over those moments and something that I would always want to go back to. Hands down!
